May 2009 Meeting
Topic
Refrigeration Tour, Honors and Awards, and Scholarship Presentation Night
Background
The San Jose State University Cogeneration Plant installation was completed in 1984. The plant includes the Allison 501 gas turbine, absorption and centrifugal chillers, backup boiler plant with water tube boilers, air emission systems, compressors, generators, water purifiers and other mechanical equipment in the campus central plant. The 6 MW Cheng Cycle plant provides steam for heating and cooling for campus buildings. Electricity for the campus is also provided by the cogeneration system with surplus electricity sold to the local electric utility.
The Cheng Cycle uses steam produced in the HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) for reinjection into the combustion chamber to provide additional power from the gas turbine. Because the gas turbine is a mass-flow device, combining the steam with the combustion gases will increase the total electrical power produced. This cycle has an advantage over the traditional combined Rankine Cycle because of its simplicity. There is no need for a steam turbine condensers and pumps. As added benefit from the steam injection is reduced NOx emissions from the system. San Jose state CoGen Plant has amassed more than 46,000 operating hours since 1991. The Cogeneration Plant employs 6 Power Plant Operators and a chief engineer who provide 24 hours per day service. They are responsible for operating, servicing and performing maintenance activities while following appropriate safety procedures.
